When BIPV photovoltaics are placed horizontally on a building, the system produces more energy because there is more solar radiation. In comparison, when solar modules are vertically integrated into a structure, they capture less solar energy and generate less electricity. Although the vertical orientation has less solar radiation, it is still advantageous because otherwise this surface would produce zero electricity.
The ideal orientation for building-integrated photovoltaics is a tilted angle towards sunlight, as this maximizes the absorption area of the solar modules.
